Neil Young: Music Can’t Change the World

At the Berlin Film Festival last week, Neil Young told reporters that he doesn’t believe music can save the world.

The time when music could change the world is past,” he said. “I think it would be very naive to think that in this day and age. The world today is a different place, and that it’s time for science and physics and spirituality to make a difference in this world and to try to save the planet.”

In defending his reasoning, Young released this comment:

neil_young.jpg

A Song Alone.
By Neil Young

No one song can change the world. But that doesn’t mean its time to stop singing.
Somewhere on Earth a scientist is alone working. No one knows what he or she is thinking. The secret is just within reach. If I knew that answer I would be singing the song.

This is the Age of innovation. Hope matters. But not hope alone. In the age of innovation, the people’s fuel must be found. That is the biggest challenge. Who is up to the challenge? Who is searching today? All day. All night. Every hour that goes by. I know I am.

My friends write to me don’t give up. I am not giving up. I know this is the time for change. But I know that it’s not a song. Maybe it was. But it isn’t now. It’s an action, an accomplishment, a revelation, a new way. I am searching for the people’s fuel. Will I find it? Yes. I think so. I don’t know why I may have been chosen to help enable a discovery of this magnitude. I know I can only write a song about it when I find it. Until then I can write a song about the search or spend all my time looking. But a song alone will not change the world. Even so, I will keep on singing.

———————————————————————————-

I don’t quite know how I feel about Young’s comments.

Maybe he’s right. Maybe the time that music could have an affect on the world is in the past.

Today’s music does not have the importance or impact it once had.

It’s a bit disheartening to think that such a great song writer and amazing musician like Neil Young feels that the art of song has lost it’s power to change things.

It’s also encouraging to know that he won’t give up on the power of music.

A song alone will not change the world, no. But, a song alone may change a person, it may change people and only people can change the world…

Music News Hits: 2/8

Here’s a little wrap up of some recent music news:

–Velvet Revolver singer Scott Weiland voluntarily entered a rehab facility, according to a statement from the band. This could affect the band’s Australian tour starting in seven days. The reported Stone Temple Pilots reunion could also be put on hold.

My take: The only thing surprising to me about this news is that he “voluntarily” checked himself in.

–Martin Scorsese has recently done a documentary on the Rolling Stones called Shine a Light. For his next project, Scorsese will work on a Bob Marley documentary. The doc is scheduled for release on what would have been Marley’s 65th birthday, February 6, 2010.

My take: Rock documentaries are pretty sweet. And Scorsese is undeniably an amazing director. I’m looking forward to both of these.

–Timbaland has signed a deal with Verizon Wireless to create the first mobile album, which will be available exclusively on the cell phone carrier’s V Cast service.

My take: This. Is. STUPID!

–According to reports, Guns n’ Roses‘ Chinese Democracy is finally finished. However, Axl Rose’s demand for more money from the label is the only thing keeping it on hold.

My take: They’ve been saying this album will be coming out for years! Now, I love GNR…the original GNR. This is nothing but hype and I will most certainly guarantee this album will be complete garbage.

Kid Rock to Rap Once Again

20061231-jet_kidrock_trains.jpg

Kid Rock is out on the road once again to promote his Rock N Roll Jesus album.

But don’t look for the same old show you’ve been seeing from Rock the past few years. The tour includes the likes of Rev Run, from Run DMC, the J. Geils Band’s Peter Wolf and former Allman Brother Dickey Betts.

Rock will share the stage with them during their mini-sets, wrapping his own material around theirs. At the end, they all return for a show-closing set, which is sure to bring the house down.

According to the Detroit News, Mr. Ritchie has caught the hip-hop jones again, once prominent during his early career.

Rock said he is currently working on a hip-hop album with some big-name producers (no names mentioned), in addition to an album with Run.

I just want to make some middle-America, suburban, middle-aged, white-guy hip-hop,” Rock says. “I want to make some hip-hop that I love, that I grew up on. And still have it be credible and down, but not compete with any of these young rappers.”

I love this idea. Some may not know that Kid Rock started out as a rapper. His first album, Grit Sandwiches for Breakfast, was straight rap. The three albums following Grits, were a fusion of rock and rap: The Polyfuze Method, Early Mornin’ Stoned Pimp and the one that put him on the map, Devil Without A Cause.

Some may think that going back to rapping may be corny or that Rock “can’t rap” or even that he is past this musically. But if it sounds anything like these two: alb11360.jpg ec4b12bb9da054c7d0d2c010_aa240_l.jpg then I say go for it. I mean really, how many people can genre hop like the Kid has done? When it comes to music talent and prowess along those lines, it’s something that I enjoy and respect.

It looks like N.E.R.D. will be accompanying Kanye West on his Glow In The Dark Tour this summer, according to Kanye’s blog.

The tour is in support of West’s third album, Graduation. N.E.R.D. is finishing up their third album, N.3.R.D. after a four-year hiatus.

Eminem Not 200 Pounds

He ain’t walkin’ around obese,” said fellow Detroit rapper Trick Trick. “Em just picked up some weight, that’s it. He can still run two miles if you want him to and still out-box the majority of them. My man still gets down.”

Aside from the subject of Em’s weight, Trick Trick revealed some details about his upcoming LP, The Villain, to MTV.

Slim Shady will definitely be on one of the tracks.

He’s rapping on ‘Who Want It.’ He’s like, ‘Who want it?’ [In the song] he’s hanging out and these f—ing idiots are always at it. If you want it, come get it. He ain’t trying to do nothing but be Em. I’m being me. If you want it, I got ya. He’s Em on there. He’s going for it. Whoever wants some can come get it. Em produced and rapped on it.

Dr. Dre will also make an appearance on Trick’s album producing one of the tracks.

But that’s not all. The song “Together Forever” will feature the last verse ever recorded by D12 member Proof.

Trick also said “Together Forever,” features Kid Rock and Esham: “[It's] like the old Run-DMC song [of the same name]. Proof [sounds] old-school [on the song]. Everybody went old-school on it. Kid Rock is rapping too. Proof and E-Sham didn’t used to get along, but they made peace. We’re all going eight [bars], eight [bars] eight [bars].”

Gnarls Barkley: Back In Action!

Good news music lovers!

Gnarls Barkley is back in action and I, for one, am stoked!

Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse have a new release coming in April to follow-up the amazing St. Elsewhere album.

According to Rolling Stone, the album is said to be full of “retro-soul shakedowns, tricked-out psychedelic rock and trunk-rattling hip-hop.”

The track being considered for their first single is described as “a funked-up organ groove complemented by French horns, a chorus of ‘la la la’s and Cee-Lo crooning in his throaty rasp, ‘Here it comes/Say it loud!’”

Another track, reportedly the duo’s favorite, sounds like “a sinister ballad featuring intricately strummed acoustic guitar chords. Cee-Lo’s mood turns dark as he repeats over and over, ‘Who’s gonna save my soul?/I know I’m out of control.’ The song is supposedly a stylish, spooky take on Robert Johnson’s delta blues.”

Goodness grief! I cannot wait for this album!
