Quote of the Day - 3/19

“If everyone’s here,” he said, “University of

Ohio State.”

- Terrelle Pryor on his announcement of college choice

University of Ohio State huh? Hmm…

UOS? I coulda sworn it was…nah, nevermind.

Good job, Pryor. You should fit right in with the rest of those morons in Columbus.

GO BLUE!

Red Wings vs. Rangers…Outdoors?

It looks like the Detroit Red Wings could be a possible opponent to play the New York Rangers next season.

“So what?” you might say.

Here’s what: the game is scheduled to be played at Yankee Stadium.

yankeestadium.jpeg

According to the New York Daily News and the Detroit News, a deal moving toward being finalized to have the Rangers play at the historic stadium during the 2008-2009 season. The Yankees will be moving to a new stadium during the 2009 baseball season.

While the possibility of playing another NY-based team (the Islanders or the Devils) are being talked-up, the more likely opponents could be the Red Wings or even possibly the Boston Bruins.

Having the Rangers play the Bruins or Wings would be somewhat of an ode to the Original Six NHL teams. The Chicago Blackhawks are also reportedly interested.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the game is “not a done deal.”

The idea for the game comes off of the success of the most recent outdoor NHL game, between host Buffalo and Pittsburgh on Jan. 1, which drew 71,000 to Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Richard Zednik Accident

Two days ago, Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik suffered a severed carotid artery in an on-ice freak accident when teammate Olli Jokinen’s skate cut him on the right-side of his neck.

Zednik underwent an hour of surgery to reconnect the artery, according to doctors. The doctors also said the blade just barely missed cutting Zednik’s jugular vein.

The carotid artery supplies blood to the brain, while the jugular vein takes blood from the brain. Blood pressure is much higher in the carotid artery.

Zednik lost about five pints of blood during the incident.

This incident and footage is very frightening, in my opinion. It’s kinda hard to watch. I mean, this man could have very well died right on the ice. Thankfully, he is alive and well.

Sports News: 1/10

Detroit Red Wings

–After receiving a contract extension yesterday, Chris Osgood got the opportunity to join teammates Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Linstrom at the NHL All-Star Game today. According to the Detroit Free Press, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo was supposed to start for the Western Conference, but he dropped out to spend time during the break with his pregnant wife.

Ozzie is one of my favorite Wings of all time. It’s good to see he’s getting his due.

University of Michigan

–QB Ryan Mallet said he felt “forced out” of Michigan’s football program after seeing new coach Rich Rodriguez’s offensive system. He said watching West Virginia in their recent bowl game influenced his decision.

“Looking at their game film, you can see what they’re trying to do with (running quarterback) Pat White,” Mallett said. “I didn’t think I could do that the same way.”

It is said Mallet is considering UCLA and Tennessee as destinations for his football career.

NHL

–Former Red Wing Darren McCarty is attempting an NHL comeback at 35 years of age. He made his debut with the Flint Generals of the International Hockey League on Wednesday morning. Personally, I wouldn’t expect to see him back in a Wings uniform any time soon…or in any NHL uni for that matter.

Sports News: 1/9

Detroit Red Wings

–The Wings signed goalie Chris Osgood for three more years. He’s been playing the “best hockey of his career” this season and is a major reason for the Wings success thus far. I’ve always liked Ozzie. How could you not?

–Chris Chelios became the second-oldest player to partake in an NHL game last night against the Avs. The defenseman is 45 years-old! Good for him.
–Three Red Wings will accompany coach Mike Babcock at the NHL All-Star game: Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Lindstrom will all start for the Western Conference. Only fitting that so many people come from the best team in the league!

University of Michigan

–QB Ryan Mallet is officially leaving the football team at U of M. Adrian Arrington and Mario Manningham will also be leaving to declare for the NFL draft. The boys in maze & blue (specifically Coach Rod) better hope Terrelle Pryor commits to good ol’ Meechigan.

Detroit Pistons

–The Pistons take on the Dallas Mavs tonight in hopes of winning 12 out of their last 13 games. This is gonna be a tough one. They always have trouble with Dallas, so we’ll see what they got tonight.

Detroit Lions

–Mike Martz was named offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, where he claims the offense is “much further along” when compared to the Lions. The 49ers offense he speaks of ranked dead last in total offense last season. Doesn’t really say much for the Lions.

Central Michigan

– Butch Jones agreed to a two-year contract extension with Central Michigan, locking him up for the next five years. Jones comes back to CMU After two interviews for the head coaching position at West Virginia.

“I’m really excited about staying at Central Michigan,” Jones said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press. “I take it as a compliment that West Virginia showed interest in me, but at this time I’m not looking to go anywhere. The administration has been great with its support, and the future looks bright for Central Michigan football.”

I think this is really great for Central. They have a coach who wants to be there and who plans to be there. Good for them.

Detroit Pistons

– The Pistons have won 10 straight games and 17 out of their last 19. Their overall record thus far is 25-7. Needless to say, the boys are lookin pretty good! But watch out…they have another big test coming up on Saturday (1/5) against the Celtics. I’m really glad to see this old-time rivalry renewed.

Detroit Red Wings

– Its looking like the Wings are shaping up to be the best team in the league during the regular season, once again. With their 30-8-3 record and 61 points in 40 games, the Wings are dominating to say the least.

–They just signed Lindstrom to a two-year extension, Zetterberg is back in the line-up, Datsyuk is playing like an MVP and Mike Babcock is going to coach the Western All-Stars.

Detroit Lions

–Yep, you guessed it…they still suck.
